But the purchase price is the least important number in this comparison. What really matters is your per-ton handling cost across a season, and that's where the tender usually wins.

What each machine actually costs to own

A new fertilizer tender with a conveyor or auger, scale system, and a 100–130 ton-capable box runs $55,000–$95,000 depending on options. Finance it over 7 years at 7% and you're looking at roughly $10,000–$16,000 per year in payments. Maintenance is light — belts, bearings, hydraulics — typically $1,500–$3,000 per year.

A used nurse truck looks cheaper until you add up the real ownership cost: the truck itself, insurance, DOT compliance, and repairs that tend to arrive all at once. It's common to spend $4,000–$8,000 a year keeping an older nurse truck roadworthy. And a nurse truck is a compromise machine — it's a truck first and a fertilizer handler second.

Where the tender earns its money: labor hours

The tender's real advantage is throughput at the applicator. A tender with a fast conveyor and onboard scales can load 10 tons onto a spreader or fill a nurse tank in 8–12 minutes.
