Grain Bin Storage Cost Per Bushel: The Real Math

Everybody quotes the bin price per bushel of capacity. Almost nobody quotes the cost per bushel stored per year — and that's the number that decides whether on-farm storage beats paying the elevator. The bin is only one line item. Aeration, handling, shrink, and the interest on the money sitting in the bin all count. Here's the full accounting.

The line items most people forget

A new bin runs roughly $2.50–$4.00 per bushel of capacity installed, depending on size, site work, and electrical. Spread over a 25-year life, that's about $0.10–$0.16 per bushel per year in depreciation alone. But depreciation is barely half the story:

• Interest. A $300,000 bin at 7% ties up real money. On average investment over its life, that's roughly $0.10–$0.14 per bushel per year — often the single biggest line item.
• Aeration electricity. Fans running to hold grain condition cost about $0.02–$0.04 per bushel per storage season.
• Handling in and out. Auger wear, electricity, and your time to fill and empty: figure $0.05–$0.10 per bushel per turn.
• Shrink and quality loss. Even well-managed bins lose a little moisture and suffer some handling damage. Budget 0.5–1.0% of grain value, around $0.02–$0.05 per bushel.
• Insurance and taxes. The bin adds to your property valuation and needs coverage: roughly $0.02–$0.03 per bushel per year.

Add it up and on-farm storage typically costs $0.30–$0.45 per bushel per year all-in. The bin price tag you were quoted is only the down payment on that number.

Worked example: 100,000-bushel bin

Now compare: commercial storage typically runs $0.03–$0.05 per bushel per month, plus in/out charges of $0.10–$0.15 per bushel. Store for 6 months at $0.04/month with $0.12 handling and you're at $0.36 per bushel — basically a wash with the on-farm number above. The difference is that the bin's cost is mostly fixed: fill it twice a year and your per-bushel cost drops toward $0.20.

The inputs that actually move the payback

• Turns per year. The single biggest lever. A bin filled once costs ~$0.39/bu; filled twice (harvest plus a spring fill) it drops toward $0.20/bu because depreciation and interest don't change. Utilization is everything.
• Harvest-time basis improvement. This is where bins really pay. If harvest delivery means a $0.30-under basis and waiting until January gets you $0.10-under, that's $0.20/bu captured — on 100,000 bushels, $20,000 a year, which alone covers half the bin's annual cost.
• Drying synergy. A bin with a stirrer or full-floor aeration lets you harvest wetter and dry in-bin, pulling double duty with your dryer investment.
• Interest rates. At 5% the interest line drops to ~$0.08/bu; at 9% it climbs past $0.13. In high-rate years, the math tightens noticeably.
• Bin size. Cost per bushel of capacity falls hard with diameter. A 60,000-bushel bin can cost 30–40% more per bushel of capacity than a 105,000-bushel bin on the same site.

When the payback doesn't work

On-farm storage usually does not pencil if the bin sits half-empty most years, if your elevator's storage rates are unusually cheap, or if you consistently sell at harvest anyway — in which case you're paying $38,500 a year for a very expensive lawn ornament. The bin pays when you use it: full bins, captured carry, and basis improvement.

The honest way to decide: plug in your bin quote, your interest rate, your turns per year, and your elevator's storage schedule. Rules of thumb get you in the neighborhood; your own numbers get you a payback year you can take to the bank.
